reading the Bible challenge-day one

here is a bible reading challenge that our students in OSM are starting.  They have been challenged to read through the book of John for the next 21 days and read the commentary that our OSM leaders write, and then post what they are learning.  It’s going to be an awesome month!

why I read my Bible

There are a lot of reasons why people choose to read the Bible.  Some do it out of fear, others do it because of incentive, while others do it out of peer pressure.  Some want to know something, some want to gain wisdom.

These are all reasons WHY you might read your Bible.  some of them have validity, others definitely do not.

I read my Bible for a different reason.  I read my Bible because I believe that it is the self-revelation of God to mankind. I believe that God has spoken, it was written, and I can know Him who created me through it.  I read my Bible because it tells me the story of a God who cares so much about his own glory that he chooses to love me.  The scriptures make one thing absolutely clear, “He is jealous for me because he is jealous for himself.”   I was watching a John Piper message with a couple of my friends last night and he spoke of this.  some might read that phrase and think, “what an egomaniacal God!”  but it is just the opposite.  There is something just so breathtaking about thinking about how significant God really is and how insignificant I really am.  It actually makes everything feel SO RIGHT.  ”God is jealous for his praise because he knows that my praise for Him will be the pinnacle of my joy.”  that was straight out of the mouth of Piper… and ultimately God’s word.

That is why I read the Bible.  i read it to understand just how insignificant I really am in the whole grand scheme of things, and yet God loves me with grace because of his preoccupation with his glory.

read your Bible in light of that today.
